A Prescription for Medical Devices: Embedded Edge Computing

When the team at Dysis Medical wanted to develop smart medical devices that would help physicians detect cervical cancer more easily, they knew they needed a powerful computer to run the underlying software.

medical devices - medical station mini pc - healthcare computer - patient station - health information system

When the team at Dysis Medical wanted to develop smart medical devices that would help physicians detect cervical cancer more easily, they knew they needed a powerful computer to run the underlying software. While computing power was key, Dysis also needed a machine small enough to be wheeled into consulting rooms. The Intel® NUC (Next Unit of Computing) checked off both requirements perfectly, says Jonathan Smith, CEO of SNUC, Ltd., a company that customizes embedded mini-PC solutions for its clients.

Today, physicians use NUC-powered Dysis colposcopes, devices used for detailed cervical examinations, to thoroughly map the cervix. Cervical mapping highlights lesions that traditional manual examinations might miss, a critical factor in early detection of cancers. The imaging platforms—Dysis View and Dysis Ultra—help physicians determine treatment options with greater confidence.

Portable and Powerful Embedded Edge Computing

Dysis is not alone in its search for portable computing solutions. Most smart medical devices need some form of computing power to operate the machine and manage the generated data. “A tower PC is large and has to sit under a desk with long cables that need to extend to a monitor and peripherals. It’s just not conducive to portability,” Smith says.

At four-by-four inches and less than two inches tall, the Intel NUC is truly a small form factor as compared to the traditional tower PC. It provides a much smaller footprint without compromising computing capability. Using the NUC, medical devices can be reduced in size. As a result, the devices can be easily moved around in hospitals and other healthcare settings.

Healthcare facilities also need smart medical devices to be reliable, given that patient diagnoses and well-being are on the line. “The equipment needs to do the job right at the precise time that the physician needs it to do it,” Smith says. Another critical factor for such computers is security at the embedded edge. Personal health information (PHI) is sensitive, so the NUC has security built in. Technologies like Intel vPro® and Intel® Trusted Platform Module (TPM) help IT to encrypt sensitive data and manage and secure devices remotely, which gives businesses peace of mind.

Custom Embedded Solutions

SNUC functions as a systems integrator, working with clients like Dysis to develop custom solutions for the products they have in mind. Dysis, for example, needed embedded computing power, a custom system configuration, and to run their branded software under the hood.

“We have the ability to not only provide a wide variety of mini-PC models, but also the expertise to customize any hardware configurations and manage the software images our customers require,” Smith says. “Customers value us as their one-stop shop. Each one has different needs, whether related to the operating system, specific I/O ports, or solution accessories. They trust us to carry the load on building the solution, allowing them more focus on delivery, installation, and support of the solution.”

While much of SNUC’s business is based on Intel® hardware and technology, the partnership is important in other ways, too. “It is critical to keep pace with changing technology,” Smith says. “Knowing that Intel has a roadmap for next-generation technologies helps us stay ahead and guide our customers as to what is coming up and how they should be specifying and transitioning their solutions.”

The Growth of Embedded Edge Devices

One of SNUC’s key markets, embedded devices, is poised for global growth, and the company finds applications for portable embedded edge computing devices in a whole range of sectors—from education to transportation to digital signage, for a variety of use cases.

For example, SNUC works with a customer that provides check-in, bag tagging, and weighing solutions for airlines and airports. “We are involved in providing computing power for these automated solutions,” Smith says. Automotive manufacturers also use SNUC to power robots. They need computing in a small and mobile form factor on a factory production line.

Smith also expects the demand for NUCs to grow with the advancements of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven devices, as AI algorithms need high-power data processing at the edge, without the bulk. “It’s all about computing in a rugged mini-PC without compromising stability, reliability, and performance,” Smith says.

“We work with our customers and deliver custom solutions. We’re about providing processing power, compactness, and efficiency; these are things that can make a game-changing difference,” Smith says, whether that difference leads to earlier detection of cancer, fewer hiccups at the airport, or a more intelligent factory floor.

For industrial applications, Cypress Porcoolpine, a rugged and fanless mini PC product family, is built with AMD Ryzen™ Embedded V2000 processors and AMD Radeon™ Vega Graphics to deliver performance specifically designed for embedded solutions.

In addition to Intel and AMD processors, Apple also has its own line of mini PCs called the “Mac Mini”. Their first models of Mac Minis leveraged Intel® Core i-series processors, but more recent models are now powered by Apple’s in-house manufactured chips.  Finally, most of the tiny Android media players are powered by Snapdragon processors from Qualcomm Technologies.  And the popular Raspberry Pi is powered by ARM processors.

In short, there are many types of processor choices when selecting a new mini PC. It mainly depends on what level of performance you need. If the performance needs are extensive, then you should pick more advanced Intel and AMD processors to get the job done efficiently.

2. GPU

Mini PCs are commonly designed to make use of the integrated graphics which are contained in the system-on-a-chip (SOC) along with the CPU.  These smaller mini PC systems do not have a separate PCIe socket for a graphics card. If your computing needs require compute intensive graphics, then select a mini PC with a PCIe x16 socket for a dedicated graphics card such as the Intel NUC 12 Extreme Dragon Canyon which offers you the ability to choose your graphics card such as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series.  These configurations will allow you to play AAA games and experience premium VR at home; or complete complex CAD models, image rendering, or high-end simulations at work.

3. Memory

In terms of volatile memory (for data that can be lost when the device is shut down), mini PCs support a few different memory variants. Most modern mini PCs come with DDR4 RAM modules in the SO-DIMM form factor – the same as ones found in laptop computers. A typical mini PC will contain two SO-DIMM sockets.  For example, the Ghost Canyon NUC9i7QNX, Serpent Canyon NUC12SNKi7, and Beast Canyon NUC11BTMi7 all come with a base configuration of 8GB DDR4 memory (a 4GB memory module in each SO-DIMM socket), but can be configured with up to 64GB.  For best performance you should “pair up” the two SO-DIMM sockets with equal capacity memory modules (SNUC will automatically do this for you).  The speed of the memory interface maxes out at around 3200Mz for DDR4 memory.  As we move into 2023, SNUC will be shifting over to DDR5 memory which will offer speeds up to 5600Mz.

4. Storage

The non-volatile storage (for data that must be maintained when the system is shut down) in mini PCs has long been based on small form factor hard disk drives (HDDs).  And though HDDs are still considerably (25% to 50%) lower cost than solid state drives (SSDs), most mini PCs currently use SSDs.  Several factors have driven this including size, speed, and reliability.

Today there are two main solid state drive (SSD) form factors:

  • M.2 (several size options)
  • 2.5 inch

The M.2 SSDs (roughly the size of a stick of chewing gum) plug directly into a socket on the mini PC motherboard and come in sizes of 22x30mm, 22x42mm, 22x60mm, 22x80mm, and 22x110mm.   Currently 22x80mm is the most common SSD size for mini PCs and capacities of those drives range from 256GB to 8TB.  Most mini PCs accommodate one to three M.2 sockets on the motherboard.  Also important to note is the communication protocol between the M.2 SSD and the rest of the computer comes in two varieties: SATA and NVMe.  Given that the NVMe protocol supports much higher data rates (which can result in faster boot times), NVMe M.2 drives are preferred in most mini PC systems today.

In regard to 2.5 inch hard drives, they are available in both HDD and SSD options and can provide larger storage capacity compared to M.2 drives. Some mini PC models come with a bracket for the drive and contain a SATA header on the motherboard to connect the drive to the system.  Since these are SATA drives, the performance will be slower than M.2 NVMe drives.  If you’re concerned about maximum storage capacity, select an HDD, but if you prioritize speed and reliability, select SSD.  Most mini PCs that ship with 2.5” drives contain SATA SSDs.

5. Ports

Mini PCs come with multiple video, data, and communications ports to make it easy to connect to the internet and other peripherals, such as monitors, mice, keyboards, web cameras, etc. Most mini PCs feature a variety of USB, HDMI, DP, audio jacks, and LAN jacks. Most of SNUC’s mini PCs also provide  replaceable lids or back panel expansion bays that allow for additional ports and expanded functionality should the native feature set fall short on ports required.

6. Operating System (OS)

When choosing your mini PC vendor, be sure they offer ready-to-go systems imaged with a pre-installed operating system. When purchasing mini PCs from SNUC, you are able to select the OS you want pre-installed on your device during the configuration process. Your choice of operating system is dependent on the base unit you select and should be determined based on the intended usage for the device. For example, the Wall Street Canyon product family, focused on business and embedded usage,  can be configured with Ubuntu Linux, Windows 10 (Home, Pro, and loTe) and Windows 11 (Home and Pro) while the Frost Canyon product family, focused more on consumer usage, doesn’t offer Windows 10 loTe.  SNUC will even manage custom images for larger projects.  You can chat with one of our sales representatives for more information.

If your mini PC comes with a pre-installed OS, you can still change it to a different one just like you can on desktop tower PCs. Similarly, you can also install new updates of your current OS. Overall, you will get the same OS experience with a mini PC as you get with other types of tower PCs or laptops.

7. Mounting and Organization Accessories

Mini PCs function just fine for people sitting on a desktop and offer a clutter-free and energy-efficient experience.  But oftentimes mini computers are working for “things” such as digital signs or point-of-sale (POS) terminals and need to be tucked away out of sight.  SNUC offers a wide range of mounting options for mini computers including VESA mounts, locking security mounts,  and DIN rails.  SNUC also offers Server Shelf and Server Drawer accessories to enable the organization of up to 10  mini PCs that can be managed from a server closet to maintain a virtual desktop environment.

Why Mini PCs are Ideal for Industrial Applications

This is where a mini PC is an ideal solution by offering the performance, memory, and storage required to keep industrial applications and operations running smoothly regardless of the surroundings.

Mini PCs for Industrial Applications - SNUC - industrial pc - industrial intel nuc - mini industrial pc - fanless industrial pc

In this technologically advanced era, businesses are looking for computing solutions that are easy to use, cost-friendly, and easily manageable. When it comes to computer devices, the use of desktop computers, laptops, and tablets has skyrocketed due to their compact size and top-notch performance.

However, some industries, like manufacturing or construction, need alternative PCs that can operate 24/7 in harsh environments. This is where a mini PC is an ideal solution by offering the performance, memory, and storage required to keep industrial applications and operations running smoothly regardless of the surroundings. So, let’s explore in detail why mini PCs are ideal for industrial applications.

Mini PC – A Brief Overview

A mini PC is like a standard PC in terms of performance, but it is much smaller in size, often available in a sub-liter chassis. They are lightweight, high-performing, and small form factor computers that can fit into compact spaces where a standard PC tower or laptop cannot go. Most mini PCs don’t measure more than a few inches tall or wide. Some of the common use cases of mini PCs include:

Many industrial sectors are actively shifting towards using mini PC solutions today. For example, cargo ships are widely equipped with mini PCs for navigation, communication, and engine management purposes.  Similarly, mini PCs are commonly used across manufacturing plants to improve production efficiency and analyze important data.

To summarize, mini PCs are currently leveraged in many different industrial sectors and their uses are growing in popularity.

Three Reasons Mini PCs are Ideal for Industrial Applications

1. Small Footprint

The first and most popular reason to use mini PCs for industrial applications is their small footprint. They provide reliable, powerful, and efficient performance despite their tiny size. Due to their compact design, mini PCs are a natural choice for tight spaces or embedded IoT applications. Larger tower computers or delicate laptops are not practical to use in most industrial settings, so their small size paired with  powerful performance capabilities make them the clear choice for all types of industrial applications.  And they can easily be mounted to workbenches, or walls with DIN rails or zip ties; or to the backs of monitors with a VESA plate.

2. Rugged Design

In addition to their small footprint, some mini PCs are designed to be rugged allowing them to thrive 24/7 in hot, dusty, and humid environments.  Mini PCs from SNUC are shock-and-vibe tested to endure unstable environments, and many have been UL Certified to ensure safe operation in rugged environments.

Some of the key characteristics of rugged mini PCs are as follows:

Fanless

Some mini PCs are fanless and can operate continuously in harsh environments without the use of a cooling fan. For example, the Tiger Porcoolpine, built with 11th Gen Intel® Core™ processors, provides top-notch performance without using any fan or blower. Similarly, the Cypress Porcoolpine, built with AMD Ryzen??™ Embedded V2000 Processors, is another fanless mini PC that offers long-term performance for small spaces and embedded solutions.

Reduced Heat and Noise

Mini PCs don’t generate the same amount of heat and noise that tower PCs do because of their energy-efficient design. These computers come with processors that create far less heat than conventional computers. For example, the Intel® NUC 8 Rugged known as “Austin Beach” is a modular PC kit that comes in a compact size but offers best-in-class reliability. It features a fanless, ventless design to minimize particle intrusion, so it’s built to survive environments most other PCs can’t – from a busy factory floor to a dusty warehouse. And even without a fan, the Austin Beach can operate in temperatures from 0-40?C, allowing it to thrive on the factory floor or on the edge of an IoT network.

Long-Lasting

Another major benefit of rugged mini PCs is their durability and reliability, even in fairly harsh conditions that might otherwise cause computers to wear down quickly. The simple lack of a fan is one of the biggest components at play here – fans tend to build up dust and other debris over time and may seize up as a result. Rugged mini PCs remove heat from processors and other components passively, rather than requiring a fan. This means there’s no need for maintenance cooling either, which increases the long-term lifespan of the computer.  It is not unusual for SNUC mini PCs to fully function for five-plus years prior to needing a refresh.

Extended Temperature Range

Mini PCs are capable of withstanding tough temperature calls. Some mini PCs from SNUC support an extended temperature range, such as the Chimney Rock which can operate over the range of 0? to +60?.  And the Chimney Rock also has a supply commitment of seven years for those applications that require a longer term system stability.

3. Reduced Energy Consumption

With growing environmental concerns, business organizations are becoming more conscious about the environmental impacts of their operations and are wanting to reduce their power consumption levels and carbon footprints. Mini PCs have shown to be an ideal alternative to traditional PCs in terms of energy consumption. A desktop PC requires somewhere between 60-200 watts of electricity to function normally. Compared to that, a mini PC  requires just 20-50 watts. With this significantly lower power consumption, the cost of electricity will dramatically drop allowing businesses to save on operating costs and decrease their carbon footprint.

Wrapping Up

Technological advancements have motivated organizations to upgrade their traditional computing solutions and go for more productive options. One such transformation is witnessed in the way of mini PCs becoming more popular in industrial settings.  Compared to traditional tower PCs, mini computers have emerged as powerful, energy-efficient, and more compact computing devices.
